Prevention of complications arising during stoma from the nursing point of view.
ŠMEJKALOVÁ, Alžběta
This bachelor thesis explores nurses' perspective on the prevention of complications arising during a stoma. A stoma is a temporary or permanent opening of a hollow organ on the surface of the body. The condition of stoma complications can be prevented by a correct and early treatment of it. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to determine the specifics that allow nurses to prevent any complications arising from stoma. To address this aim, the following research questions were formulated: How do nurses educate patients with a stoma? What care options currently exist for a patient with stoma complications? The research sample consisted of ten nurses. Four of those nurses had completed a course or training on stoma care. Qualitative research was chosen for the implementation of the empirical part. To collect data for this research, a number of semi-structured interviews were conducted with both general and stoma care nurses. The interviews were transcribed verbatim, and the obtained information was then coded and categorised. The research took place in March 2021. The results of this bachelor thesis are divided into eight individual categories: education of nurses, types of stoma, stoma dressing, stoma aids, stoma complications, education of patients with stoma, organisations cooperating with stoma patients, and disadvantages of people with stoma. The results that emerged from the interviews with the nurses showed that they regularly treat stomas and have limited knowledge on how to educate patients about stoma and how to prevent stoma complications. The research revealed that the nurses were aware of the key elements of stoma education and regularly educated their patients. Furthermore, the data also showed that they actively tried to overcome stoma complications. If any stoma complication occurred, the nurses consulted the relevant professionals. The findings of this research can be used as study materials for students of medical major and medical staff.

The thesis is focused on the use of stoma care in practice. The work consists of two parts. The first part is theoretical. This section is devoted to the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract, additional chapters are devoted to the main theme, which is colostomy. There is history and development of stoma care, indications for the colostomy performance and possible complications. Another large part of the total is the nursing part where I attend nursing care of the patient with colostomy, this includes stoma care, peristomal area care, mental health care, nutrition and hydration care. There is also included a chapter about education of the patient and family members. The empirical part focuses on the research, where the method of the data collection is an anonymous questionnaire. The survey was conducted in the surgical clinic with 48 patients with colostomy. The aim of the research was to objectively evaluate and to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of stoma care, find out in which areas of daily activities the largest problem with colostomy patients occurred in terms of the adaptation process, and to improve the lives of the patients with ostomy as well.I found out how much needed a qualified stoma nurse is. I see her importance in the care of stoma patients.
The impact of colostomy on the patient's life
JELÍNKOVÁ, Adéla
This bachelor thesis is focused on the problems of colostomy patients, especially on changes in life from previous life without the colostomy. The aim of this work was to find out what changes occur in life of patients with colostomy. To achieve the goal, we used a high-quality research survey that was conducted through semi-structured interviews with colostomy patients and stomist nurses. In the research, we found many facts about the changes in the lives of these patients. There have been changes mainly in their social life, eating habits, defecation; fewer changes have occurred in the social sphere, including jobs, sporting activities, hobbies and even travel. From interviews with patients, we have also confirmed the complications that appears after establishment of colostomy. These were particularly early complications, especially of the skin nature (redness, soreness, skin maceration, rash). Another, very fundamental change in life of these patients has been the treatment of colostomy. With this change, patients are helped by a stomist nurse who helps them with choosing stomic aids and teaches them how to take care of colostomy on their own. From interviews with stomic nurses, we learned about changes in the psyche. Patients experience depression, embarassement, inferiority complex and social isolation. The help of patient's family is very important while helping with these issues. The elaboration of this work created a clear material for seminars of health workers, especially nurses.
Colostomy as a nursing problem
PÓLOVÁ, Markéta
This bachelor thesis deals with the colostomy-nursing issue. Colostomy means an artificial opening the colon through the abdominal wall and it is followed by a big effect to a life of a patient. Older patients undergo colostomy more and more often (Šváb et al., 2008). The aim of this bachelor thesis is to find out the specificity of a nursing care for patients with a colostomy. For this aim was established these exploratory questions: What expertise do nurses have? What is a specificity of a nursing care for patients with a colostomy? For the implementation of the empirical part of this bachelor thesis, we chose qualitative research. The data collection was made by a semi-structured interview with nurses and stoma care nurses. There were eight nurses and two stoma care nurses in the research group. All of them work at the Department of Surgery. The interview was recorded and afterward literally transcribed. All the obtained information were coded and categorized. This research was taken during February and March 2018. As the interview shows, all the nurses have some knowledge about colostomy care and all of them treat colostomy. The research also shows that nurses have a deficit to some extent. Some of the nurses were not sure with their answers. It was found out that most of the nurses refer colostomy patients to stoma care nurses. The outcomes of the research will be realized in a seminar designed for nurses and should help to their improvement in this issue. We have better chance to avoid complication when nurses are well informed how to use all the equipment in a good way and when they know how to treat colostomy patients.

Leisure time utilisation of persons with stomy
VLČKOVÁ, Šárka
I this thesis anatomical, physiological and functional information of certain parts of the human body organ systems after the damage of which a stoma must be performed is given. A stoma is indicated either after an injury, an illness or a loss of functionality and patency, It constitutes management of a life threatening situation and facilitates life restoration. Basic types of stoma are described, and since the most common type are colostomy and ileostomy, a greater attention is given to the disease and its treatment in the small and large intestine at the ends of which the stoma is created. The thesis also deals with the stoma aids, leisure time activities, psychological aspects of the disease, social problems and awareness of patients with a stoma. One of the objectives was to find out how patients with a stoma spend their leisure time and if they tend to isolate themselves from society because of their handicap. Another objective was to determine if persons with a stoma are sufficiently informed about leisure time activities they could pursue and where to get the information. The data needed to carry out this survey were obtained through studying professional materials available. The quantitative research method of interviewing was chosen, the data collection technique was an anonymous questionnaire aimed at a certain set of respondents as well as semi-standardized interviews with professionals who were given questionnaires for the respondents. The research set was formed by respondents with a type of a stoma mentioned in the questionnaire. It has been found out that the most common type of a stoma is ileostomy, predominantly in men. The research has shown that persons with a stoma isolate themselves from society and are not sufficiently informed about leisure time activities they could pursue. The research results should bring a better cooperation among professionals and thus enhance awareness and improve care not only for persons with a stoma. The outcomes of the thesis could make professionals produce literature concerning the life of persons with a stoma and update the existing information with new experience, advice and recommendations.
